Snowy Owl Mother and Chick at the Nest, Utqiagvik, Alaska

Melissa Groo

Snowy Owls are greatly threatened by climate change. As the Arctic climate has warmed, winter snows in many areas have become less deep, more prone to icing, thaws and refreezing. Consequently, populations of lemmings, their main prey source, have collapsed. In those areas, snowy owls have ceased to nest. Snowy Owls may now number as few as 14,000, down from 300,000 a couple of generations ago.
