From Rubble to Recovery

Tom Vierus

Scientists of the Wildlife Conservation Society-Fiji assess cyclone damage in Fiji's protected Vatu-i-Ra seascape which was heavily impacted by storm surges during Cyclone Winston, a severe Category 5 Cyclone making landfall in the South Pacific Nation in 2016. The strong waves caused by the immense power resulted in the breakage of many corals. This particular site was reduced to rubble. Shot on assignment for the Wildlife Conservation Society.Four years later, a follow-up dive expedition organised by the Wildlife Conservation Society-Fiji assessed the recovery status of affected areas and were positively surprised by the number of young, three to four-year-old corals at many of the sites.
