First Round Application Requirements

At the time of application all applicants must submit the following

  • A portfolio of 20-30 “Best of” still images
  • Your portfolio should not look like a compilation of traditional nature stock images.  Rather, you should present a body of images that reflect a personal and unique style and a strong variety of natural history topics, people, and culture.
  • Completion of the written application including essays on career and conservation outcomes resulting from your photography
  • A $125 application fee, the amount required for annual dues for Associate Fellows. A 50% discount is available to applicants from countries listed as the 60 poorest by the IMF.

Stills Applicants must also submit

  • 1 Conservation photography photo essay of 12 images accompanied by a brief written description of the story.
  • A successful submission will clearly reveal the conservation threats and opportunities at hand, telling a complete and compelling story through a cohesive and unified body of images. A good test is to see if someone who is not familiar with your work can look at the photo essay without the narrative and identify the key conservation issue you are addressing, the problems, and the solution. The accompanying written narrative should help explain context and background, but should not be needed to understand the photo essay.

Video Applicants must also submit

  • 1 Conservation themed short video, 5 minutes or under.  The video should address the conservation problem and solution that is being pursued or recommendation.  It is always helpful when a call to action is clearly stated.
