Sagebrush Survivor

They've survived habitat destruction, drought, megafires and humans, now with little more than 200 Columbia Basin Pygmy Rabbits in existence, this tiny bunny faces a deadly hemorrhagic fever likened to Ebola for rabbits. But all is not lost. A team of researchers and conservationists have plans to vaccinate every rabbit they can catch, and thanks to a generous land donation, those bunnies have a bigger place to call home. For decades, these conservation heroes have fought to protect the rabbit through habitat conservation, captive breeding and indomitable spirit. Originally shot for Nature Conservancy Magazine and edited by Alex Snyder (Winter 2021).
